Thanks to the handicap system, Golf is probably the most accessible sport on the planet on paper. I mean, what other sport could you have a competitive match against the worlds best? Yes Tiger may have to give me 36 shots but we could play 18 with a competitive edge.
So why is it one of the most inaccessible sport on the planet?
Price - It costs an arm and a leg. From memberships, to Golf clubs, to lessons. Now I can't change your membership price but I can certainly show you how I manage to play on a budget.
Attitudes - Golf is a sport for the retired. That's the perception from the outside anyway. Let's face it committees love that, as much as they want new membership fees coming in. They want their mates joining from the local bowls club, not you or me. It's about changing attitudes in golf and that starts from the top down. National Governing Bodies, Media, Committees... Golf attitudes need to change for the game to survive.
Clothing - Don't get me wrong brands have come a long way in the last 10 years. From Jordans on the golf course to Adidas putting Hatton in a Hoody at Wentworth. But thats pretty much it on tour, even the cool dudes on tour have to tuck in their shirt and god forbid if they show their knees in shorts. You don't need a kit to play like other sports. So why are we forced to put on this boring, expensive costume?
The #MakeGolfAccessible Vision
Now I can't fix the social issues in golf, but I can certainly use my platform to leave a footprint. Here is how I plan to do it:
Step One: @Golfhipster. Breaking the stereotype. Growing a community of like minded people who don't want to fit the mould. Demonstrating that you can be a good golfer, respect the game, dress how you want to dress, keep up to date with Golf fashion, boost mental health and most importantly have fun.
Step Two: @VintageChubbs. Show how you can look good on the course on a budget. Whether you buy from VintageChubbs or just take inspiration, its there to show you can play this fantastic sport in style at a lower cost. The second hand market in Golf is amazing, make use of it.
Step Three: @MakeGolfAccessible. Coming soon. Crowd funded charity trying to tackle the social issues within the sport I love. I'll start by using my Education background, increasing accessibility in schools, the vulnerable teenagers I already work with, disabilities and open sessions for Men to talk at the range or course.
Step Four: The Pipe Dream. Working with brands and national governing bodies to help influence change in Golf. Own my own little golf facility/vintage shop open for all.
